What are Merch By Amazon Tiers?

Merch by Amazon tiers refers to the number of designs sellers are allowed to upload onto the marketplace. It’s a concept that Amazon implements to stop the market from being flooded with designs and to ensure a good customer experience.

After you’ve signed up to Merch by Amazon and your account is approved, you’ll begin with a limit of 10 designs. These, however, can be spread across any number of Amazon’s print-on-demand products. For example, if you upload 10 designs, you can create hundreds of listings for products like t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts, all featuring one of those 10 designs. In other words, one design can be used for any number of products. Designs must be unique and high quality to survive on the Merch by Amazon marketplace.

Once you’ve sold 10 products, you’ll move gradually up the following tiers:

  • Tier 25
  • Tier 100
  • Tier 500
  • Pro

How to Apply for Merch by Amazon

The approval process for Merch by Amazon can be challenging as the company has strict guidelines and requirements. But by following the steps below, you can improve your chances of acceptance.

Sign Up for an Invitation

Visit the Amazon Merch on Demand website.

Create or Log In to Your Amazon Seller Account

Click the "Sign Up" button, and you'll need to sign in to your existing Amazon account (if you already have one) or create a new one.

Remember that the email you use to create your Amazon account will also be used to sign in to your Merch by Amazon account.

After you click the “Sign Up” button, you’ll be prompted to accept the Merch by Amazon Terms and Services Agreement

Provide the Necessary Account Information

Following the acceptance of the Merch by Amazon Terms and Services, you'll see a page outlining the three things you'll need to provide Amazon to get started.

  1. Business contact information: This may seem confusing if you don’t already have a business set up. If you don't, simply provide your first and last name. If you do have a business, enter that information here. While not a requirement, you can also enter the link to your website to show Amazon that you already have an audience.

  2. Bank account and routing numbers: Of course, Amazon needs this information to pay you. You’ll select the country where your bank is located. If your country is supported, you'll proceed. If not, you'll be informed that you can't continue with the Merch by Amazon account setup.

  3. Social Security number or other tax identification number: If you’re in the U.S., provide your tax information. If you’re outside the U.S., you'll be prompted to provide your local tax identification number.

Best Practices when Creating a Merch by Amazon Account

Here are some best practices that will help increase your likelihood of getting accepted into the Merch by Amazon program:

  • Provide product links to an existing storefront, another POD site, or your website. This allows Amazon to see the quality of your artwork, showcasing your ability to produce appealing designs.

  • Amazon reserves the right to make judgments about whether or not your design gets accepted or not. For best results, please use Amazon's design templates to make your products.

  • Double-check the information you have provided before you proceed to the submission of your application. This reduces the risk of errors that could delay or jeopardize your acceptance into Merch by Amazon and shows diligence and professionalism on your part.

You can also visit Merch by Amazon’s FAQ section to better familiarize the ins and outs of their program.

Submit Your Application

After providing the required information and checking your application for best practices, you can submit it for review. Merch by Amazon applications are typically processed within 14 days.

If you have not received an application status update within 14 days, you can contact Merch Seller Support for assistance using Amazon’s Contact Us form.

Upload Your Designs

Once approved, you can start uploading your designs to Amazon. Initially, you will be in a lower tier with a limit on the number of designs you can upload.

As you make more sales and meet performance criteria, you can move up to higher tiers with increased upload limits.

How to Upload More Designs

Merch by Amazon employs a “tier system” to maintain the quality of designs on the platform. The system is straightforward: the more sales you make, the higher your tier, and the higher your tier, the more designs you can create.

There are currently eight publicly listed tiers:

  • Tier 1: 10 designs (starting tier)
  • Tier 2: 25 designs
  • Tier 3: 100 designs
  • Tier 4: 500 designs
  • Tier 5: 1,000 designs
  • Tier 6: 2,000 designs
  • Tier 7: 4,000 designs
  • Tier 8: 8,000 designs

Some speculate that to advance to the next tier, you must make sales equal to your current tier's design allowance while using at least 80% of your designs. However, keep in mind that Amazon has never directly confirmed this.

For example, if you are in Tier 1 and make 10 sales with 8-10 designs, you qualify for Tier 2! If you make 10 sales with 7 designs, you don’t qualify, however.

Examples of Different Merch by Amazon Designs and Products

While you can upload your own unique designs to Merch by Amazon, there are naturally some Merch by Amazon best practices, as well as strict guidelines you must follow:

Let’s look at some examples of Merch by Amazon products:

Tank tops: The below design is simple. However, the tank top comes in a variety of colors and can be ordered for both men and women. You’ll also notice that the listing advertises the fact this is an Amazon Merch product and highlights the ‘Extra Savings’ the buyer can enjoy.

T-shirts: Below is an example of how to create a Merch by Amazon t-shirt. You’ll notice there’s an ‘Upload’ button on the t-shirt itself so that you can see what your it’ll look like before your listing goes live.

How to Climb the Merch by Amazon Tiers Fast

Getting out of Tier 10 might be simpler than you think. There is a fair amount of competition across Merch by Amazon, so you need a solid strategy to climb those tiers quickly. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of four ways that you can get ahead of the game and stand a better chance of selling your merch.

Implement a Diverse Promotional Strategy

When you sell on Merch by Amazon, you can (and should!) not only promote your products elsewhere but also sell them through different channels.

For example, as your designs are not exclusive to Amazon, you can open a Shopify store and sell your designs through that using a different manufacturer or PoD service. This will help you maximize your reach.

As well as having your own store, and selling via Merch by Amazon, of course, promote your products through the likes of Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Discuss topics related to your designs and generate a buzz around your brand. If your designs are related to nature, for instance, you could target all the nature lovers out there with interesting nature facts and anecdotes.

If you’re selling high volumes, you might also consider sponsored product ad campaigns through Amazon’s PPC service.

Merch Jar, for example, helps you target the right keywords with your sponsored ads for a winning bidding strategy to drive interest and conversions. The more people see your products, the more opportunity you have to showcase your unique and creative designs to the right people and generate more sales!

Use Competitive Pricing

Pricing is a tricky business. Amazon pays its Merch by Amazon sellers royalties for the products they sell. The actual amount varies greatly. For example, for a $15.99 t-shirt, sellers will get a royalty of $1.93. On the other hand, if you price your t-shirt at $25.99, you’ll get $9.32. Obviously, the latter is much more appealing.

While it’s tempting to price your products high to feel like it’s worth your time and effort, consider starting off on the low side. You need to build up trust and a customer base before you can charge premium prices. You also want to get yourself out of Tier 10 as quickly as possible, which will be harder to achieve through high prices.

Be mindful of competitor prices but also be mindful of their reputation, number of reviews, and how long they’ve been with the program. In all likelihood, if a seller is selling the same products as you at much higher prices, they’ve probably earned the right to do so with consistently high-quality designs and a loyal customer base. When you’ve sold more products, you can begin increasing your prices gradually as you move from tier to tier.

Identify Evergreen and Seasonal Trends

As well as taking advantage of holiday seasons, like Christmas, 4th of July, and Valentine’s Day, it’s also helpful to identify evergreen trends. This is opposed to fleeting trends that don’t stand the test of time. For example, remember when ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ signs were a thing? This trend peaked between 2008 and 2012 and has slowly died off since.

While it’s great to get in on recurring seasonal trends, ones that pass offer little lifetime value. This means that when you identify rising and rapid trends, you either need to get in quickly with advertising your designs or avoid them altogether.

While it’s perfectly fine to cash in on rapid trends, ideally, you want your designs to stand the test of time rather than be seen as irrelevant or even embarrassing in a time to come. Evergreen trends, content, and designs are those that are always relevant and appealing, regardless of how much time has passed.

Google Trends is a great way to find evergreen themes for your designs. Type in your topic idea and search ‘Interest over time’. You’ll be presented with a chart. The chart should be fairly consistent and not experience either gradual or rapid declines.

If you want to optimize your existing campaigns and figure out which themes perform the strongest, Merch Jar’s Smart Campaigns feature automates keyword management by continuously monitoring search term performance, generating new keywords from high-performing terms, and negating underperforming ones. This streamlines the keyword research process, making it easier for you to find evergreen trends on Amazon.

‍Create Evergreen Designs

Below is an example of an evergreen design. The sweatshirt features the classic ‘AUSTIN’ message that’s been a consistently popular design for many years.

Creating evergreen designs is a strategy that ensures your products have a long-lasting appeal, generating steady sales over time regardless of seasonal trends or temporary fads.

Characteristics of Evergreen Designs

  1. Timeless Appeal: Evergreen designs should not be tied to specific events or seasons. They should be relevant and appealing year-round.
  2. Broad Audience: They should cater to a wide audience, increasing the potential customer base.
  3. Consistent Demand: These designs should be based on themes, interests, or messages that have a consistent demand.

Examples of Evergreen Design Categories

1. Professional Themes
  • Occupations: Create designs related to specific professions like nursing, teaching, or firefighting. For example, a t-shirt with the slogan "Proud to be a Nurse" or "World's Best Teacher" can appeal to professionals in these fields.
  • Workplace Humor: Funny quotes or relatable messages for office environments, such as "I Survived Another Meeting That Should Have Been an Email" or "Chaos Coordinator" for managers.
2. Hobbies and Interests
  • Sports and Fitness: Designs related to popular sports or fitness activities like running, yoga, or cycling. Examples include "Run Now, Wine Later" or "Namaste in Bed".
  • Pet Lovers: Designs for pet owners, such as "Dog Mom" or "Cat Dad", which celebrate the bond between pets and their owners.
3. Inspirational Quotes
  • Motivational quotes that inspire or uplift, such as "Believe in Yourself" or "Dream Big, Work Hard". These types of designs can appeal to a broad audience looking for positive messages.
4. Humor and Puns
  • Light-hearted and funny designs with universal humor can be evergreen. Examples include "I'm on a Seafood Diet. I See Food and I Eat It" or "Sass Queen".
5. Cultural References
  • Designs that reference classic movies, books, or TV shows can also be evergreen if they have a timeless appeal. For instance, quotes from beloved characters or iconic scenes that fans will always appreciate.

Tips for Creating Evergreen Designs

  1. Research: Use tools like Google Trends to identify topics that have consistent interest over time. This helps ensure your designs have a lasting appeal.
  2. Quality and Simplicity: Focus on creating high-quality designs that are simple yet impactful. Avoid overly complex graphics that might deter potential buyers.
  3. Versatility: Design products that can be easily customized or adapted to various products like t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags.
  4. Feedback and Iteration: Pay attention to customer feedback and sales data. Refine your designs based on what resonates most with your audience.

Collaborate with Local Entities

Partnering with entities such as local bands and event organizers can provide bulk order opportunities for your merch. Bands often need merchandise for their fans, and events require themed apparel. Approaching these entities with tailored proposals can secure significant sales and increase your exposure.

You can also design merchandise for local sports teams. Pitch your design idea to coaches and team organizers as a way to streamline their merchandise ordering process. This can lead to bulk orders and regular sales, helping you advance through the Merch by Amazon tiers more quickly!

Be Your First Customer

This is a really simple way to get around Amazon’s tier algorithm, provided you have the money to do so. It also gives you a nice boost in Amazon’s ranking system. Buy 10 of your products and consider it an investment in your business. Once you pass that first milestone, you can go on to upload even more designs that potentially appeal to many more consumers.

You might also ask friends and family to purchase your products and leave an (honest) review. This will increase your credibility and your store rank in Amazon Merch.
