How to calculate Amazon profit after ad spend

  1. 1Work out what one unit leaves you before ads: selling price minus product cost, Amazon fees and any other per-unit costs. With the numbers above, a $30.00 product costing $8.00 to make, with $9.50 in fees and $1.00 in other costs, leaves $11.50 a unit.
  2. 2Multiply that by the units you sold to get profit before ads. $12,000 of sales is 400 units, so $4,600 before ads.
  3. 3Take away your ad spend for the same period. $4,600 minus $1,500 of ad spend leaves $3,100, a 25.83% margin after ads.
  4. 4Compare the two margins. Margin before ads is profit per unit divided by price. Margin after ads is profit after ads divided by total sales.

FAQ

Break-even ACoS, ROAS and TACoS

Your break-even ACoS is profit per unit divided by price, 38.33% in the example. Spend more than that on ads for each ad sale and the sale loses money. Break-even ROAS is the same line the other way up, 1 divided by break-even ACoS, or 2.61. The break-even ROAS calculator and the breakeven ACoS calculator work out each one on its own.

TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales. Its break-even is your margin before ads: at a TACoS equal to that margin, ads use up all of your profit. The TACoS guide covers how to read it over time.

Where to find your Amazon fees

Most sellers pay two fees per unit: a referral fee, a percentage of the price that depends on the category, and, with FBA, a fulfillment fee set by size and weight. Amazon's Revenue Calculator in Seller Central shows both for any ASIN. Your payment reports show what you were actually charged, which is the better number once a product has sold for a while.

Put anything else you pay per unit, like inbound shipping, packaging or prep, under other costs. Monthly storage and returns are harder to pin to one unit; spread them over the units you sell if they are large for your products.

When ACoS is over break-even but you still make money

An ACoS above break-even means each ad sale costs more in ad spend than it makes. You can still be profitable overall if your other sales earn enough to cover the gap, and the calculator says so when that happens.

What it can't tell you is how many of those other sales your ads helped bring in. It only shows whether the totals add up for the period you entered, so check the same numbers again next month.
