How to format an Amazon product description
- 1Write the description the way it should read, or paste an old one. Each new line becomes a break tag, and a blank line becomes two, so paragraphs keep a gap between them.
- 2Start bullet lines with a dash, an asterisk or a number. They become bullet lines with a • in front, since list tags aren't allowed.
- 3Leave the markup to the formatter. &, < and > are escaped so Amazon shows them as text. Bold markers like **this** are removed, since bold isn't supported. Paragraph, bold or list tags in an old description are converted the same way, with a note naming the tags it dropped.
- 4Check the preview and the character count, then copy the HTML into Seller Central.
FAQ
Amazon descriptions only allow line breaks
Amazon's Listings Product Detail Page Guide says not to put HTML, JavaScript or anything executable in a listing "other than break", and to use the break tag for line breaks in the description. A Seller Forums notice from Amazon says HTML tags that aren't supported stopped rendering after July 17, 2021, and a line that uses one may show without formatting or be removed.
Some guides still list bold, paragraph and list tags as usable, and the odd seller says they still work. The formatter sticks to what Amazon has written down, which is line breaks only.
What else Amazon doesn't allow in a description
The same guide rules out phone numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses and website links in titles, bullets, descriptions and images. The formatter warns when it spots a web address, an email address or a US-style phone number. It doesn't look for mailing addresses, so check those yourself.
Counting characters
Guides say the tags count toward the description limit, so the formatter shows two numbers: characters with the tags, which is what it checks against the limit, and the characters a shopper actually sees. Sellers report a 2,000-character limit, but Amazon's public pages don't confirm it and it can vary by category, so the limit is editable.
To check the description alongside your title, bullets and backend search terms, paste it into the listing character counter. To clean the keyword list you're writing for, use the keyword processor.
